Advanced sharpening technique in PS

    The trick in this technique is to create a layer mask that separates edges from mid tones, and apply sharpening selectively.

    Cool! Looks like it basically does the same as Masking does in LR? I'm gonna see if I can replicate this trick in GIMP...

    I'm a bit foggy on using Lightroom, but I'm assuming that's the reasoning behind it. Post some images if you can get this to work on gimp. Would love to see them.

    This is also a great way to reduce noise in the image since noise is generally in the mid-tone and shadow areas. By separating edges and mid-tone areas its easier to apply aggressive NR without losing overall sharpness.
