Some of you may remember that back in April I posted about a modern dance performance by Puerto Rican choreographer, dancer, and professor Viveca Vázquez and her dance troupe "Taller de Otra Cosa" at the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art. Leica - DSLR vs. Leica M9P - Modern Dance Recital That performance marked the opening of an exhibition at the Museum which took a look at Viveca´s extensive career.
The exhibition closes this weekend, and as part of the closing activities, another dance performance was staged, this time by Mr. José Pepe Alvarez, who is one of Viveca's most distinguished alumni. This was, for the most part, a one-man performance, with very occasional interventions by a second artist, mostly for staging purposes. The performance coincided with the closing of another exhibit at the Museum, and took place in four (4) empty exhibition halls. After each segment, the audience (limited to only 40 people per performance) were moved by the ushers from one hall to the next.
I was again asked to photograph the performance. This time I only brought the Leica M9P. Most of the shots were taken with the Zeiss ZM 50mm 1.5 C-Sonnar and 18mm 4.0 Distagon, and a few with the Leica 35mm 2.5 Summarit. The lighting was extremely dim, many times consisting of just one lamp or spotlight. This time, I decided I would embrace the noise; no noise reduction was applied except for slight noise reduction (during ACR RAW conversion) on the third and fourth sets.
The only problem during shooting was that there was no music to the piece, only silence. That, the empty halls, and the Museum's hardwood floors combined to make the Leica's shutter and recocking sound extremely and unacceptably obtrusive. Fortunately, this was the dress rehearsal, but there was an audience (of students mostly) who probably thought I was the biggest jerk in the world.
In retrospect, I think I would have liked to photograph the performance with the M6 and some Ilford Delta 3200. Maybe next time...
