i dont have a nex, only the x100.
i know the nex's LCD is better spec wise but when i played with one at the shop, the LCD display looks dim and color looks cold to me
compare to the x100 which is quite nice despite the lower resolution screen

not really interested in a flame war or anything just that im looking forward to buy a nex body and just wanted some opinions. thanks

I have both and I find the LCD one of the Nex's real strong points. Part of it is the way it can flip up and let you shoot from your waist or belly, but a BIG part of it is how visible it is in bright sunlight. There's also a setting in the menu for something like "sunny day mode" or something that makes it even better. I look at the LCD on the X100 as an afterthought because most people are buying it because of the EVF/OVF. Its OK, but not great in bright light. The Nex LCD is the best I've ever used. Opinions can vary, but that's mine!

    Guilty.

I find the LCD on both to be very good. The NEX's is a bit better in terms of viewable resolution. But for whatever reasons, even though the X100's LCD is smaller, it "feels" bigger for me. And I too like the colors on the X100's LCD better.

I am using both, but much prefer the X100 screen.

The X100 has a screen.... Hmm, I never noticed.
The Nex screen is the best, bar none.

I agree that the screen is sharp and bright (perhaps the best currently available in this sense) , but I look at it a bit more broadly: I feel that the screens offering a greater range of movement are much more versatile. Therefore, for me, the GH2 / G3 type screen is far superior to that of the Nex cameras.

Right, TOTALLY a personal preference thing. I find the G and GH flip OUT screen really irritating because in order to look down at it and shoot from the waist, the screen has to be out to the side of the camera like an extra appendage. Whereas with the Nex, I can just flip the screen up right behind the camera and look down into a very compact package. And this will completely vary by user and preferences - no better or worse here. Just better or worse for a given user. For me, the Nex screen is the best there is. I have a GH2 and every time I've tried using the screen in any position other than flat against the back of the camera, I've found it really irritating. To me its useless and the Nex screen is the greatest thing since sliced bread. For others, the exact opposite is true...

That's a better summary than mine - it all depends on your personal way of working.

As I have noted elsewhere, I don't yet see Nex as being for me due to their lack of VF and narrow lens range.

Although a competing M4/3 with lens will likely be smaller, I don't find the Nex 5 with the kit zoom at all unwieldy or awkward. It is substantially smaller than any equivalent DSLR setup. If the Nex 7 has a VF, and I can get reasonably fast, good quality autofocus lenses with equivalents of around 24, 35, 50 and 90, I will be having a close look.

The thing with the Nex is, it's very easy to do MF with legacy lenses.
Really easy and intuitive. So, the Nex without a VF is very capable of expanding your vision without being stuck in AF.

Actually, my Leica M and Canon FD lenses really saved the camera for me.
The IQ with good glass is superb.
The X100 has a screen but it's really for menu adjustments. I mean, why would you use it unless it was a situation that required a screen shot.
If you use a good lens, say the 35 FD 2.8 on the Nex and use the screen on the X100...
The Nex will kill the X100.
It is apples to oranges and the reason I will keep both.
The IQ is similar between the 2, atleast close enough in print form.

Either my advanced age or nerves...I don't have a high ratio of keepers with my Nikkor 105mm/Nex5. It sounds like the rumored firmware update for the camera may help that with the peaking focus aid. (split circle would be best!)

Hey cous.... Maybe a Nikon "A" screen would make it perfect.
That split image on the angle.... How sweet it was.

Thanks fellas but not really what I'm after.

I merely wanted to know - if you place Nex and x100 side by side, play some pictures on both, which LCD would display a better picture? or during live view, which camera display the scene "better" given the same situation?
Thats it. Not needing to know the merits of other things.

    Thanks again I appreciate it

I think you'll probably need to tell us what you mean by "better picture" at this point...

Things like color accuracy, is it sharp and bright, etc
There's no need to be too technical about it. I just need an overall feelings that's all.
Just that I've seen both display on their own, never side by side. I'm feeling x100 display is nicer to look at, but techically Nex's display should be better.

Color accuracy with a screen.... Hmmmm, not for me.
The Nex has a better screen.
Neither should be relied on for accuracy. The screen may be close but not accurate.
Side by side... The Nex is brighter and sharper.

Hard to say. When PREviewing a shot (before I take it), I don't see much difference in quality except for the difference in visibility in bright sunlight. They're both fine. For playing a shot back AFTER the exposure, the X100 tends to make my shots all look overexposed. If I look at a bunch of them I'll start to worry that I don't have anything good but then when I upload them to the computer, they look fine. The Nex doesn't do this. So in this sense I'd say the Nex is better, but I'm not sure if THAT is what you're asking either. It also might have something to do with my settings on the two displays, so with a more neutral setting they might be more similar...

Yes thanks that helps a little
Just worried that there's something wrong with the Nex screen
Everytime I test one is at the Sony lifestyle centre. And everybody seems to say Nex has a bright screen but when I tested it, it looked dimmed and the Color cold. Maybe the lifestyle center's lighting condition has something to do with it. I feel even my GF1 looks better.

Yes this is what I observed as well that the Nex screen is smaller. Maybe due to the smaller pixels? I learned that Nex has a setting that can display full size and that helps.

On the x100, playback of the files looks terrific but when you get them onto a pc they are overexposed
