There's a massive (4 floors? 5?) antique shop with floor after floor of independently owned booths in Cambridge. We wind up there once every 3 or 4 months looking for one damned thing or another. This weekend it was an analog phone, since we just got a land line again after 10 years. I wound up finding a 60's black rotary desk phone that works great, sounds great, and could be used to demolish an interior wall or repell invading huns in a pinch... solid stuff, that "1960's made-in-Amurrrica."

At any rate, I thought of you lot as I strolled through, finding the occasional overpriced camera from yesteryear. Aside from some late-80's autofocus plastic crap, here's what I saw:

I love old cameras. When I see how things are priced at these antique malls, I am never surprised when they fold and go out of business. It's a shame really, because I love wandering through these museums. Everything seems to priced at least twice as much as one can get it AT AUCTION (which means people are competing to buy something and the online auction price should be higher than at a retail market). Here's what a nice clean Universal stereo camera sold for at auction last week...... half of the antique stores asking price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Classic-195...583?pt=US_Vintage_Cameras&hash=item3a8a02c567

    Rant over.

I wish I could justify having a landline, because nothing sounds better than those old rotary dial phones. But no one ever calls me anyways.....LOL.

I wasn't very dilligent about shooting all of them (was trying to keep up with the wife... she knows me, and won't let me go down too many rabbit holes in a place like that or we'll be there for 14 hours), but there were at least 3 other "Polaroid Land Cameras." One was litle a little 60's looking suitcase, with a viewfinder built into the top of it. The front opened downward, and the lens came out on a bellows.

Case in point, with the other phone we almost bought: Marked at like $45, was a cheapo 80's desktop phone exactly like every single US household had (slim, pinkish color, curved), and when we asked the owner about it she immediately offered to sell it for $20. Why in the hell don't you just mark it at $20? I hate haggling.

I won't haggle. It makes me feel like less of a man. If I can't afford the asking price, I just move on.

I'll never forget this time Randy Johnson (a Hall of Fame Baseball pitcher who was earning a high 7 figure or low 8 figure salary at the time) came into my record shop sometime in the late 90s while he was a Seattle Mariner. He picked out a bunch of used CDs and a few records and brought them to the counter. He saw a used copy of a Pink Floyd CD boxed set. It was perfect and mint and complete. New at the time, they were around $135.....I had it marked quite fairly at $85. Now I don't know if he didn't realize I knew who he was, or if he was just a cheapskate and didn't care, but he asked if that price was the "best I could do". The guy was going to make more money in one year of work, than I will make in my entire lifetime and he wanted to save $20?! Nope..... I don't haggle anymore.

I've seen and read good things about this Fuji stereo camera..... http://www.amazon.com/Fuji-FinePix-3D-Digital-Optical/dp/B002NPCK1W

I think John Flores has one. Also there is a company called Loreo that makes stereo lens attachments for DSLRs and m43 cameras. Haven't heard much about their performance.

I've just bought a (used) Nikon 300mm f2.8 VR and a x 2TC lll ……….. without really telling "you know who" ……. even at the used price it can be eye watering for a heavy "piece of glass"

plus we are off to South Africa for a month next Monday, so my pension is now, as they say "maxed out" for some time …….. plus my daughter is getting married next year ……. so next year pension and the year after has just vanished!!!!
