The past weeks were spent traveling through China for the second time in my life, spending time in both big cities and rural areas. We had a great time traveling by trains, planes and automobiles. There was a bit of a language barrier, but hand and feet are universal, so we managed.

Some gear talk: Since this trip for us was experience first, photography second, after much deliberation I opted for the handy combination of an EM-5 with 12-40 or 25 1.4, and an EM-1 with 40-150, all in a small ICU in my F-stop Guru backpack. It proofed to be a great travel setup. Next to that we took a little waterproof TG850, and a RX100 mk1 for convenience.

I've made an album on Flickr with a first selection, but would also like to share one picture per stop here.

Very nice set of shots. That's a trip still on the bucket list.

I appreciate the info about your travel kit setup. I often flip flop on taking a superzoom for convenience (need to get the shot because I'm not coming back again) versus a couple of cameras with quality lenses (need to get a good shot because I'm not coming back again).

I did spend quite some time thinking about the best kit to bring. Even though I normally prefer shooting with prime lenses, I knew I'd probably be better off with zoom lenses here, since there wouldn't be time for deliberate photography. Still I wanted the best possible images, and even when super zooms are handy (I had the O 14-150 mk 1, and still have the P 14-140 mk 1), they're generally too slow for low light shooting. That's where the two 2.8 pro lenses came in. I was in doubt for a long time if I'd bring the 40-150 (I though the 75 might be sufficient), but in the end I was very happy that I did. It's fast enough, it has great range and it's a wicked sharp lens. The same goes for the 12-40. For fun I did bring my favorite prime, the 25 1.4 and there where moment I was glad that I did.

One more for the road:
