The pictures below are of my sister's dog Cleo. I've posted them here before and some of you were kind about the monochrome one with her toy zebra. We looked after Cleo when my sister and her family were on holiday and it was always a highlight of the year for me. Yesterday morning at about this time we took her for what was to be her last walk before my sister's family came to collect her in the afternoon. We took her to some local woods where we immediately became separated. This sometimes happened - she would disappear for a couple of minutes and then reappear. We shouted and searched for hours and then we were joined by my sister's family, freshly back from their trip. Another hour or two of searching and then I got a call from a kind man who had spotted her injured by the side of the road - apparently run over. We don't know if she left the woods soon after we split up and had been injured for some time. It's equally possible that after we spread out to search for her she tried to make her way home across a busy road.

We took her to the vets and she was later transferred to a specialist pet hospital. She died of her injuries in the night.

We are in pieces and I'm typing all this because I don't know what else to do right now. She was a lovely little dog and she was only four.

This time yesterday she was a happy and healthy little girl and she looked like this.

that photo of Cleo with her toy is so precious. I know what you're going through, Richard. In time, your grief will give way to only happy memories. Wishes of peace are being sent your way.

I seem to have chosen two pictures in which she looks sad and pensive, but she was basically a very happy and sweet-tempered dog and much-loved by those that knew her. I can't quite believe I'm talking about her in the past tense as I suppose we are still slightly in a state of denial. The grief and guilt comes over us in waves and then we are OK for a while until we catch sight of a corner where she used to sit or a bowl or towel still left out from yesterday. Thank you for your kind words.

[I could add that she gave that zebra a good chewing straight after I took the picture]
