At least I'm pretty sure I did...

There is a long thread over on POTN about Greentoe.com, where you can make an offer to purchase cameras and all sorts of other stuff. Only authorized retailers are used to fulfill orders. No shipping. No tax. 14 day return policy or the return policy of the retailer, whichever is longer. The only trick is that you don't know who you are buying from until your offer is accepted.

I've never used this site, but I was bored. So I put in a bid for the RX100m3 at $685, thinking I have no shot. But they supposedly will counteroffer, so I figured I'd at least see what the bottom line price is. I got a counteroffer at $710, which I was going to accept, but didn't have time to respond to it because of work. A little while later I got a message saying my original offer had been accepted. Retailer is Unique Photo, whom I've dealt with before with no issues.

I'm not 100% sure this is done just yet,as my order just says "processing", but based on a lot of folks on POTN using it I am not too worried about the legitimacy of the service or transaction.

Considering this camera is very new to the market and listing at $798 I am pretty happy and surprised to get it for $685. I'm hesitant to promote Greentoe before I receive the camera and can verify that there are no bugs in the process, but I wanted to pass it on in case anyone else is interested in RX100. Not sure if another sale at $685 is possible, but even $710 seemed good to me. I was ready to pay $798 with 3% cashback for the camera and some useless accessories from Adorama.

I'll update this when the transaction is finalized.

This Greentoe website looks really interesting as a means of fleshing out unadvertised discounts. I just put in a couple of low-ball bids on an OMD-EM1 and an OMD-EM10 to see what happens.

Had email communication with Greentoe today and rec'd confirmation and tracking that camera has shipped. Unless I get an original RX100 with "III" stenciled on the top it seems like I'll be good to go.

    Great deal, Dean!

I had not heard of Greentoe yet. It sounds like a cool concept, especially since they are only using authorized retailers. I have seen a few legit dealers selling on ebay at discount calling the items "open box"... maybe this is an easier way for them to discount.

Received camera today. Looks "new in box" to me. Have it on charge now.

Short of having an issue and needing to return the camera, which hopefully I won't get a chance to evaluate, I'd rate my Greentoe experience very highly. One of the principals, Andrew, is very responsive to emails, and he is active in thread on POTN if questions arise. I'd certainly recommend checking it out if you are shopping around for a price.

Got a counter to my offer for the Zeiss 55/1.8 that saves $75 off retail. Not too shabby.

I went through Greentoe once for a camera. The email strictly stated that I was not to share the name of the retailer, which was interesting. How can they prevent people from being unscrupulous?

I was looking at a $800 camera body and put in a $700 bid. Got an offer back of around $735. When I looked at the merchant's site who offered me the camera, I noticed they had it on promo (you know: original price ($800) camera + SD card + case + flash, etc.) and some where they were offering it still for $800 but with a $50 gift card for the store... ahhh, so that's why they could offer me the discount! I'm guessing it works like the affiliate sites.

But, why not? I'd rather pay less (including shipping/tax) initially, THEN decide once I own the camera if I want extra accessories rather than being lumbered with ones I can't specify myself. In addition, while a gift card for that particular store is somewhat valuable, give me cold, hard, cash savings any day!

I hope the Greentoe model works out for them. Seems like a nice way to cut out the middle-man, especially with camera stores who can be notoriously pesky with their upsales.

I think it's a great way to get around the minimum advertised price absurdity. The good guys can't list great prices and the scammers keep on truckin. This levels the field a bit.

My RX100 is kaput, and Sony charges @211+tax to fix it and plus my shipping cost. So I tried the greentoe. Similarly they offered me $720 on $800 camera (RX100 iii) after my first offer. Although I increase the price to $700, nothing changed so it's not like ebay with counteroffers, just a retailer discounted rate which is not advertised otherwise... They tell you the price in the first e-mail and what it sells it for at Amazon... Good saving, but you can find it cheaper by getting returned copies, etc...

Definitely true that you can get cheaper used/returned/refurbished, or from a reputable seller on eBay, but if you insist on brand new w. warranty as some folks do, it's a nice alternative.
