Almost 8 years ago, I lived in this big industrial-style loft building in my neighborhood, which backed up to a rail bed. I assume the lumber that my building was made to mill arrived via that rail line. But it hasn't been touched in decades, and they were talking back then about converting it to a walking / biking path... fast forward 8 short years and we're FINALLY REALLY (maybe probably) GONNA DO IT! It got funded, anyway, and they've drawn up plans.

Today, it's overgrown and full of the detritus of angry teenagers & the homeless. A friend started a "Friends Of The Greenway" non-profit to help organize the community's thoughts, and made me a board member. He asked that I get out and shoot it "before," so here are some from the first two outings I've made. There's a lot more to cover, yet.

And I promise it won't be all just vanishing lines...

Basically they're doing urban camping down here. A chair, some logs to sit on, a fire pit, and empty beer cans.

I was squatting down to get this angle, and realized that's a dead pigeon in front of me, with a big hole carved into its carcass.

I'm looking forward to not finding a tick on my legs next time, probably in vain.

Looks like a fun project. Similar thing here in Atlanta took hold, and we got the Beltline as a result. It's been amazing for the city, fed foot and bicycle traffic to lots of new restaurants and connected to multiple parks. Makes it fun to get out and find a snack or just people watch.

Great images. We have something with a similar look near to our olympic stadium......except it is on a canal. Graffiti (or street art) in profusion, grit and grime cheek by jowl with canal narrow boats and loft style apartments occupied by workers in the City of London. It makes great photo fodder and part of me hopes it does not change for that reason. There again I don't live there...just visit infrequently.

Best of luck and look forward to seeing more as it progresses.

I've ridden your beltline several times as it gets built out. I hardly recognize the city I grew up so near, when I'm cruising around it on a bike. It's amazing. I'll be photographing Decatur in 2 weeks for a bike tour company, come to think of it. Will barely spend one night in town, on my way from Savannah to Miss.

It's fun watching it change but hard to keep up with. We are currently house shopping in the Decatur area with some frustrations going on, but still hopeful. It's normally where we head to get our taco fix and visit the Dekalb International market. The Beltline is doing great things here though with improving the area. We are currently right on the main intersection of Little 5 so we cut from the condo over to it all the time. Great murals and wall art all the time.

Would love to see more about the stuff you're doing while swinging through the area in Decatur.

This is a great project. I look forward to seeing the progress. I am fortunate to live three blocks from our Greenline route in Memphis. I can ride less than a half mile on streets, then be on the line for about 20 miles one way. It is so relaxing.

I really like the look and feel of the series. I look forward to what comes next, and would like to see some shots with the "current denizens" of the area.

    Cheers, Jock

I'm pretty healthily afraid of the current denizens. I suspect it's a mix of young kids with homes and older genuinely homeless folks. Either way, me walking up with $$ camera gear is probably ultimately a bad idea.
