Apple has confirmed an iPad event on March 7th, in San Francisco...

REad the story at Engadget or Computerworld which has a bit more info.

Me, I cant wait to see if all the rumours are true. Even if just one (the doubled resolution) is true, I am most definitely in. Better battery life would be good, too :)

I skipped iPad 2, and I'm still using the original. Hopefully, version 3 will be leaps and bounds better.

Safari crashes on my iPad1 about 20% of the time I am using it. I wonder if that's Apple's way to "encourage" me to upgrade. It did not use to crash that often for the first year after I got it.

+1 for better resolution. USB, SD slot and RAW support would be nice but I'll pass out from holding my breath for those!

Now if they made a tablet with all of those I might be interested. Otherwise I'll stick to my netbook.

I think an SD card slot would be brilliant, and if it had the ability to transfer files that way and not just photos it would be even better :)

Have you upgraded to the latest version of the OS?

    Also, try resetting the iPad:
You can do this by pressing the Home button and the Sleep/wake switch on the top the iPad's case and holding them down together for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo. The iPad should then reset itself. The boot up process takes a few minutes and then the iPad should be responsive again.

I don't think Apple would ever add a SD card slot, even if it's read only. Bummer though.

Because Apple wants to be able to sell the higher storage capacities of the more expensive iPad models. Even with a "read only" SD card slot, it would allow users to store data on the SD card, and then access the data on the iPad.

Hmm. So you mean you think it's possible that the iPad3 might offer an SD card slot for some versions, as opposed to others? Or are you saying they're not going to let anyone use SD cards unless they're going to use them on one of their laptops or desktop computers?

Of course, I do realize this is all conjecture on everyone's parts now.

Have to say, as someone who has never enjoyed playing in Steve's garden, I have a Galaxy Tab 8.9 and would never go near an iPad in a million years. It does everything - and I mean everything I could wish for and it does it with a slicker interface and a more powerful and robust operating system than the iPad. The bonus is that it fits in a coat pocket. The downside is that I can only use it to carry 2 coffees not 4...

Oh and it has an SD card adaptor that doesn't cost as much as a small Greek town...

Have you owned and used an ipad? For longer than a day or four?

The android OS is nice. The Samsung tablets are nice. God knows, theres enough of them. I think they are breeding like bunnies in the factories.

I prefer to use the ipad because I find it more stable and accommodating for my needs, than an Android tablet could ever hope to be. In order to get what I want on Android, I would be spending just as much as I would for iPad... there's really not much difference in price when you compare like with like. About $100 at the very top end and including 3G. If you shop at discount houses, the gap gets a lot smaller.

[edit] FYI yes, have owned and used Android as an OS on phone, but not on tablet.

Fair points Sue. My first foray into tabletdom was with an Archaos Android machine - it was rubbish and went back to the shop within a week. I was then given an iPad through work. I kept it for the thick end of two months before handing it back - actually, near throwing it back... I then acquired an original GT 7-inch and was blown away by the form factor and the functionality in comparison to what I had struggled with before. The 8.9 joined me just before Christmas and is in another league; still small enough to carry everywhere (it will even fit into a pocket on a pair of cargo trousers) whilst powerful and functional enough for all purposes. Bear in mind that my primary usage is business - email and web based and for that the GT knocks the iPad into a cocked hat. A number of my colleagues have been using iPads for longer than me and scoffed originally at the GT, but once they tried it they were seriously impressed. So impressed that two have bought their own... You're right, price is in the same territory as the iPad and quite rightly too. I'd actually pay more for the benefits.

As an aside I also suffer an "official issue" iPhone - the worst phone in the history of phonedom and a classic example of "the emperor's new clothes" - it's a great pocket toy, but an abysmal communications device. I prefer to use my Nokia E71 - coming up to five years old but still a better business tool because it actually facilitates the making and receiving of calls

I had access to an iPad from work and got to use it pretty regulatory for about 2 months. I discovered that I didn't like tablets all that much. I did like having a smaller device for web access, so I bought the much cheaper Kindle fire, which does all I want in a tablet device. I still prefer a real keyboard and hate the smudgy screen. I might get an 11" Mac Air, however, for my next laptop.

I'm interested in this for photography and for access to the web that I can see. Now if they'd only include a phone, I'd be all set.

I use my iphone for texting, mostly, and occasionally receiving calls (I rarely make them) but interestingly, have only had issues with dropped calls when using different carriers to my normal. Also never had an issue with the antenna during my brief foray into having an iPhone 4... went back to 3GS because I like the form of it much better.

There's a lot to like about Android, but even though I use an antivirus prog on my android phone, I still get fretful about possible malware. Apple may be a walled garden but I know that the apps I download are safe. *shrug* its horses for courses. I wish Apple would make a smaller iPad but I don't think that's too likely. I bought mine originally for reading (and almost never used it for that) and games/email/web when I did not want to be sitting at a computer. For that, its perfect.

iPad 3, however, for me to buy, is going to have to be lighter than the 2 (which is lighter than the 1) and there has to be a really compelling set of features for me to buy it. I am hanging out to see what its bringing, but am increasinly tempted to get a 2 just because the discount houses are selling dirt cheap at the moment (clearing stock), and soon, purchase of a 2 will only be possible as second hand, or via the refurb store.

    Anyway... onward!
