I'm pro new ideas. I'm also pro new shapes for cameras. But besides novelty, I'm not sure what this does that a camera phone doesn't do.

Better image quality, I would assume.

it's a tiny sensor....not much bigger than in phones. Maybe it's just good enough and different enough to sell enough to the gadget crowd to make the bean counters happy.

    Here's how Canon sees it

If one has only ever made pictures on a cellphone...

A number of design elements remind me of a TLR or MF slr. The WLF, knobs for the strap etc.

I like the strap! I guess if it's cheap enough to give it a go, just not sure why you wouldn't use your phone?

Frankly, I don't see why phone makers haven't been able to throw an 8x zoom in there. Like THIS Panasonic Lumix DMC-XS1 / F5 / FS50 | PhotographyBLOG new Panasonic....I still say add a telephone to a good camera instead of a camera to a phone. I will NEVER buy a smart phone..... I just don't need one. But if someone shoves a phone into a good camera, I'll definitely buy one. (Obviously for me cameras are more important than email or texting or searching.)

But shame on Panasonic for naming a camera XS1 when there is already a Fuji named X-S1. Maybe I'll try calling a camera store tomorrow and ask them when they plan on getting the X-S1 in the shop (when realistically they won't get either one of them).

Looks like a lot of fun. I like the shutter release button on the bottom.

kudos to Canon for trying something different. They and Nikon may be the only ones left not re-hashing retro styles these days. Funny.
