I have thought we will never see a serious compact with a decent EVF, but thankfully Nikon has decided to fill this void.

i have liked the images from the 7700 but it was lack of viewfinder that put me off

I'll give it a year or so for prices to drop

Nice work that they've managed to fit an EVF behind a pop-up flash unit.

Now that's what I'm talking about. Not only is the viewfinder back but it's better than the original, tunnel-like, optical VF.

So, what would we rather have? This new Nikon P7800 or the much-more-compact Panasonic LF1 with lower-res EVF and slower lens (with the same reach) at the long end?

I would like more pocketable but the difference in price though will help my decision making

Very nearly ticks all of the checkboxes that I need:

    flip-twist
    external mic input
    (hopefully) decent video
    image stabilization

Just need to see if 28mm is wide enough for my application (in car video)

I also like that the rear LCD is not only an RGBW display but also includes white pixels (like Sony's RX100) to boost performance in bright light and/or reduce power drain.

I don't know if the P7800 has a multi-aspect sensor. Probably not. But it would be worth checking to see if the 16:9 aspect ratio gains you anything on this particular camera.

I think as a sole camera, I'd take the P7800. As a complement to a large-sensor camera, I'm not sure... although I am still inclined to the P7800.

I wish there'd be more competition to the LX7, with its uber-fast lens and 24mm WA.

John, if you ever decide you want to experiment with the P7800 and wide-angle, I have the Panasonic LWA52 wide-angle adapter I can lend you to play around with.

Nice to see an EVF. But leave it to Nikon to integrate the EVF in a less than attractive manner like the V1 and V2! Looking forward to see if the IQ will best the Canon G15/16.

Thanks for the offer Chris. The P7800 is definitely a want, not a need, so I'm going to resist temptation as long as I can.

I reckon they done an excellent job to get an EVF in there with minimal disruption to the camera outline:
    ZNikon-P7800-MFR-3Q.

I'm not into pocketable that much so the P7800 would do me nicely. Now, Canon needs to pull its head out from where the sun don't shine and do something like a G2X with a high res EVF. THEN, I'll buy one.
