My younger daughter lives in the Wilmington, North Carolina area and seems to be settling in here somewhat, so we're becoming occasional visitors to the area. We spent a week here last New Years and liked it enough that we've spent the same week here this year. Summer beach condos are available for a song this time of year, so getting a one bedroom beach front condo with a view is a really nice way to relax during my wife's winter break and to get to spend some time with our daughter. Didn't do a huge amount of shooting, but spent some time out with the Df, mostly with the Zeiss trio (21, 25, 35), but a bit with the 24-120 and 75-300 as well.

Here are some Zeiss shots from New Years Day and the day before and a few non-Zeiss shots from earlier in the week. This camera, particularly with these Zeiss lenses, has just killed my gear lust - I can't even IMAGINE what I could get that I'd like as much, let alone more...

First, some of the awesome trees down in Fort Fischer...

And a couple of previously posted shots from Christmas in Rochester, NY, which we spent with my wife's family - just a couple of shots from the Erie Canal, both Zeiss:

OK, I'm sold. Send me some links to the "for a song" condos! I had a chance to look at a couple of these on Flickr a little while ago, but missed most.

Are those "live oaks" that have grown that way due to the wind?

Never been to Wilmington, NC...but may have to take a drive down in February or so...to escape the northeast's version of winter. I particularly love that ocean shot with the horizon line of sort of an orangey hue...and the boat tailed grackles one, as well. That said, I'm enjoying them all Ray and feeling quite nostalgic for the coast.

I love so many of these it's hard to pick a fave..... looks like a place to visit someday. My daughter and her husband will be visiting in April next year, after NY. She used to be a big Dawson's Creek fan.

Great shots Ray! I was in NC a few years ago, travelling from NY to the Florida Keys, a fantastic trip with great memories and even though I did not visit this particular area (I believe) I would love to go back someday.

Not sure what those trees are BB, but I love checking them out when we come down here...

Rentals are easy to find. You could do a search. We used Victory Beach Vacations but I'm sure there are others similar. 1-2 bedroom oceanfront condos for about $400-600 per week. Expensive for rent, but dirt cheap for a vacation rental... Direct flights from Philly are also really cheap.

I think they filmed that in Wilmington - maybe that's why you mentioned it? It's a pretty nice area - very low key compared to some of the more well known beach areas.

Very nicely done, especially those sunset shots. We've vacationed in Wilmington and the surrounding area several times. Last time though was 11 years ago at Oak Island. It is indeed a nice area.

Looks like a pretty special place. I'm not too hot on North American geography but I'm assuming it's on the east coast somewhere. The images looking over the water are really nice. Is it the wind that gives the trees a permanent lean like that?

Yeah, east coast, well south of where we live but still a couple of states above Florida. The trees have got to be leaning from a constant adaptation to wind. I've seen similar on the West Coast, but nothing quite like these...

Back home now, but a small amount of research has turned up that they are indeed "live oaks", a tree I'd never heard of, unless it's just shorthand for oaks that are still alive??? Very interesting trees, clearly shaped by the wind...

I think the "live" part means it's a species that stays green in the winter.

Ahhh, that makes sense. I don't know all that much about trees beyond some real obvious stuff. That's good to know.
