What is the reason for the venting on the RX1 hood? I would think this would leak light and defeat the purpose of a hood?

It lets you see through it. It does not effect the performance of the hood.

you should be able to figure it out...
Yeah, I think it's style points as much as anything, since the only hood you need to see through are on rangefinder cameras with off-set (non TTL) viewfinders. It works on the X100 / X100s for example. But on the RX1, it doesn't do anything but potentially look cool to some people. It doesn't serve any purpose, but doesn't do any harm either...

This is speculation, but I believe the vents are designed to reduce the amount of flash light blocked by the hood.

    That's a new one... ;)

They are common on rangefinder lenses.
