So I'm getting into recording more and more video, and using a lav mic to remotely record the audio, and lately I've been trying to set the date/time on both my camera & voice recorder so I can more easily pair them up in post.

However, when I transfer the video files to the computer, Win 8.1 ignores the Date Created and makes a new one.......... the date & time it was transferred to the computer! ARGH!

I can't seem to find a work-around for this. Anyone have an idea?

It's not the editing software..... it's Win 8.1. When I transfer files from the camera to the hard drive on the computer, Win 8.1 ignores the date created for the files by the camera and replaces it with a create date of when I transfer the file.

then a better question might be how are you transferring the files to your computer. I would think a drag and drop method wouldn't result in Windows changing a "create date", but I could be wrong.

A different method might be lining up the waveform patterns.

I use Premiere Elements 14, and use the on camera audio as a reference, then use the higher quality audio - match up the wave forms and boom....done.

This IS NOT an issue in editing process!

This is an issue caused during FILE TRANSFER!

Both the camera and audio recorder are set to the same date & time. But when I transfer them to the computer............. WIN 8.1 CHANGES THE 'CREATE DATE'

I was hoping to synch the two devices and use the Create Date to pair them up (for editing). But the original Create Date for the files are changed by WIN 8.1. NOT MY EDITING APP!

    1) calm the hell down
    2) I'm recommending an alternative so you don't have to rely on what you've been doing.
    3) if you don't like the recommendation, feel free to not use it
    4) acting this way, you'll likely not get a lot of help from others

    Have a peachy day.

Feel free to let me know how Premiere Elements 14 can restore the original Create Date of the files.

    Here is the issue:

    Create%20Date.

All of these files were not originally created on May 7. I made them on May 5th, over the course of 6 hours. It's difficult to match up the audio with the video when I have no idea when they were originally created.

You are not getting what I'm trying to help you with. That's fine. I hope that you find the answer you are looking for.

You're trying to get me to understand synching two audio tracks in editing software. I understand perfectly how to synch two audio files. But that's not what I'm needing to do.

I'm trying transfer a video file from the camera, created on May 5th at 2:12 PM as well as an audio file from a digital voice recorder, also created on May 5th at 2:12PM to my hard drive.

But when I transfer them to my computer, they are now both 'created' on May 7th at whatever random time the computer picks. As there are multiple files created at different times in the field, the Create Date now shown on the files on the hard drive makes it very time-consuming to pick a video file, then start playing all the audio files to see which one I need to synch it with.

If I can get around Windows ignoring the original Create date and making a new one based solely on when I transferred the files to my hard drive, and instead retain the original Create date (& time) in the File Manager, then it will be a gozillion times faster to see an MP3 audio and an MP4 video that both have a date/time stamp that are within a few seconds of each other and know which audio file needs to be synched with a given video file. Sorting the files by their original create date/time will literally pair them up automatically.

My apologies for not initially understanding the proper issue.

here's some software that seems to be able to correct the issue of new date creation...and I think there is a free trial offered. I would assume that there is some way to keep it from happening, but I'm not very tech savvy.

Restore Original Modification and Creation Date of Files

Maybe I missed it, but *how* are you transferring the files? If you're using the card directly in the computer, you can try copying over the entire folder to your computer. This will give the folder a new create date, but should (based on my test) leave the (image) files in the folder with their initial dates.
Alternately, you can try enabling the 'date taken' column in Windows Explorer (windows 10)and it will show the original dates:
    upload_2017-5-18_9-55-21.

I'm dragging & dropping. Enabling Date Taken only shows the date & time of transferring to the hard drive.

After spending most of the afternoon yesterday taking both audio & video tracks (some video files did not have a separate audio track created), I did a test run of RichCopy this morning to see how well it performs.

It works perfectly. Once I get all the files transferred to my hard drive, I simply sort by Date in ascending order, and everything is displayed in chronological order. I just need to remember to synch the camera & voice recorder before I start recording, which only takes about 30 seconds.

    Sort%20by%20Origin%20Time.

I now know that files C0001, MAH00729 and 170524_001 were created at the same time (1:40PM). The C0001 will be the 4k video I will use for final production, MAH00729 is the 720p version I will use for editing, and 170524_001 is the separate audio track for those videos.

I can also see MAH00735-MAN00740 have no 4k video, nor an audio track, which tells me I took that video for another use.
