I couldn't find a portrait thread for portraits in general, and starting a thread for portraits from Laos seemed unlikely to get much action.

The photos below were taken at a book party given by Big Brother Mouse http://www.bigbrothermouse.com at the Hoikor Khmu village, an hour's boat trip up the Mekong north of Luang Prabang. I'm still working on the pictures of the party itself, but I liked these individual portraits, so thought I'd get them posted. The little boy shot in black and white full figure, looking at the camera, was deaf and pretty much excluded from the party festivities by his local teachers, who, in their defense, had no special education skills to help him out. He was very sweet and seemed thankful for the camera attention. (Big Brother Mouse brought a deaf staff member and started teaching some of the school children Lao sign language. They are an amazing organization.) The rather sad little boy seemed to be too young to be in the class, but some of the other children, as well as adult from Big Brother Mouse were able to include him, and one little boy een gave him a book.

Nice. Wish I'd made it to Cambodia, but maybe next time. Myanmar too.

Ever since I read "The Glass palace" I have been dreaming about visiting Myanmar. One of these days I'll just hop across.

A great beginning for a thread.....some really impactful photography. Mine are quite anodyne by comparison. But here goes ...some street candid portraits:

NIce stuff, Peter, not "anodyne" at all. The guy with the pipe is my favorite -- a very powerful sense of personality in that shot. And the seated man in the shot below is quite touching, I think.

    Not so Candid

My friend Souk and I were taking not so candid candids of one another. Here's one of his: I'm in the middle with Charlie, my travel companion on the left and our friend Vong on the right.

this isn't the original shot? I'd love to see that as well. Even if you're not knocked out with it, I enjoy seeing the creative process (finding the shot within the shot)
