I gotta say, Ricoh just gets better and better for an already stunning compact camera. IMHO.

    New "Slight" custom image effect
"Muted" might be a better term for this JPEG preset, which makes colors appear more faint than in other modes. This preset supports further customization of vividness, sharpness, contrast, and vignetting.

AF mode customization for the AFL/AEL button
Previously, this button could only be user for spot AF when the switch was set to AFL. With the latest firmware update, options for mutli AF and pinpoint AF have been added, though spot AF continues to be the default setting.

    "Ambient Brightness" film GR imitation
When the new Ambient Brightness setting is set to Original, the camera tries to mimic the lighting of photos from film GR cameras. The default setting of Normal leaves the lighting unchanged. RAW files taken in Original mode can be developed with Normal lighting in-camera, but the
    opposite does not apply.

    Folder naming by date
You can now choose to name folders based on date (xxx_MMDD) or image sequence number, the old behavior which continues to be the default.

    ISO Auto-High settings bugfix
On the ISO Auto-High Settings page, the Change Shutter Speed option will now be shown in 1/3EV increments whenever the camera's ISO (sensitivity) step is set to 1/3EV increments.

New aspect ratio RAW development option
When developing 3:2 RAW files in playback mode, you can now select the aspect ratio (3:2, 4:3 or 1:1).

Firmware upgrades are definitely a very nice feature for a high end compact. You can feel the camera is more of an investment.

Always nice to see regular updates, but nothing really of interest to me this time around.

One fw thing I love to see - make the C-AF switch position customisable so you can have AE-L at one switch position and AF-L at the other. C-AF is basically unusable anyway so its frustrating being stuck with it...

Thanks for this Chris, unfortunately still no user defined auto iso level for manual or tav mode :(

Drat! I've been looking at the Ricoh GR for months but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I keep vacillating over whether I really need it given the cameras I already have (see my signature below and add a couple of Pentax DSLRs). But I've sold off a number of cameras over the past month or so and I have some money burning a hole in my pocket. And Ricoh keeps making it clear that they regard their cameras as investments as opposed to mere consumer electronics.

In TAv mode both A and S are fixed. What should the camera do when it reaches the ISO cap if there is one? :)

I think adding 1/500s 1/1000s etc in auto HI ISO to be used in A mode would be preferable.

If there is not enough light the camera will still choose a lower shutter speed than you may want though.

I prefer to have control of iso in av mode, you can use it to help control shutter speed.

But you can already do it in Av mode with auto HI ISO specifying maximum ISO and minimum shutter speed, or am I misunderstanding what you are saying? :)

I set the minimum shutter to 1/250 but it will still drop below that if the lighting is not adequate for a correct exposure. That's in av mode with auto high iso selected. I'll recheck my settings, but that is what happens on mine.

Has the ISO reached the maximum ISO you set? If so that's normal. If you don't want the shutter speed to drop below 1/250, then use TAv mode, the ISO will keep rising when there is not enough light. These two modes should be adequate unless you need a minimum shutter speed of 1/500s or above.

Yeah, they are adequate, but iso limiting would have been nice like the grd 4, mind you the noise even at the highest iso on the GR is still suitable for black and white. Thanks for your advice:)

you should be able to figure it out...
Absolutely agree. The logic is fine as it is, it just lacks a fast enough (for me) minimum shutter speed using auto ISO in Av mode. With Nikon, Fuji, Samsung, and almost surely others offering higher minimum shutter speeds with the same logic, this is one firmware improvement I'd think Ricoh would be jumping to make. But they've been using a high of 1/250 for so long they must think it's all anyone would ever need.

Oh well, maybe in the GR-2...

It should be pretty easy to add the 1/500s and 1/1000s, surprise that they haven't done so yet.

Ditto for me. I like how it's set up, but having a 1/500 minimum setting would make it much better
