So with Sony's Clear Image Zoom and Canon cropping the sensor on the G7X, is there any difference or does the RX100 III still produce better IQ using CIZ?

The RX100 has more resolution and will be a little friendlier to crop.

Is the Clear Image Zoom effective?

Never use it. I can always crop in post.

    Ditto.

I've always understood that digital zoom in-camera is only applying a crop which you can do later in post, with more time to think about composition.

And if you crop in camera, it can't be undone.

But Clear Image Zoom is not digital zoom.

you should be able to figure it out...
It sure as hell isn't optical zoom - they have it in the RX1 if you doubt that. It's digital zoom - they just claim it's somehow enhanced to "approach" the quality of optical zoom. A crop is a crop is a crop. I'd rather do it myself after the fact...

I believe it is. The process is a crop with interpolated pixels added. You can do this yourself in post.

No, it is not optical zoom.
