High up in the Altiplano (High Plain) of Bolivia, the Salvador Dali Desert lies over 4500m above sea level. This desert is named after the painter whose works featured background landscape elements that are similar to the moonscapes found here. Despite the bright conditions, at this time in the early morning the temperature is below zero degrees celsius.

Gaffer tape, actually  It stayed on for about two months that included walking the Inca Trail.

Am I the only one expecting to see melting rocks, or sideways mountains?

    Nice shots still!

A superb series. Beautiful images - framing - mountain light - and most of all, a sense of place. Thanks for sharing them, Nic!

Very nice series - I spent some years working (geology) in Bolivia so this brings back memories. Hope you can get up a bit farther north from there to Uyuni and the salars, they are worth seeing. And if you're tired of the 4000m and cold, a side trip to Cochabamba gets you to some lovely low elevations (2500m in Bolivia is low...) and warmth in a charming small city. Buena suerte!

Thanks everyone. It really is a very surreal place to visit.

Thanks, Colin. We did this trip back in August which left from Uyuni and included the salt flats. We never made it to Cochabamba, however. Our other stops in Bolivia were Copacabana, La Paz, Sucre, and Potosi (including that cursed silver mine!)

    Muchas Gracias!

A great set, Nic. I'm rather jealous about all your travels, however quite thankful that you share your work with us here and on Flickr. Lovely, cold colors... Your wife looks cold out there, yet beautiful.

The portrait of, possibly, your guide is excellent. I hope you can get a print to him!:bravo-009:

Thanks, BB. It was certainly very cold when you get up into these altitudes, and especially once the Sun goes down.

I have sent a copy of the picture of our guide (good guess!). He was looking very gangsta* on this occasion with his choice of track suit and sunglasses so it was quite funny to see him dressed like that in these surrounds.

*In reality, Alejandro was anything but gangsta!

    Wow, neat series!

That looks like a serious place to be . . . as in, don't make any mistakes.

I take it you had not just pulled out of the drive-through at McDonalds . . .

    Cheers, Jock

Thanks, and no I hadn't posted anything from the Inca Trail yet (and I remember seeing some of your shots from Peru last year whilst we were in the planning stages of our trip). I have five and a half months worth of photos to sort through so these that I have posted here are just the tip of the sorting and processing iceberg for me.
