On the trip to Peru a few weeks ago, something happened twice that has me worried. Late in the trip I was standing on railroad tracks and wanted to take a picture. I turned the camera on, and the EVF only came up halfway. I looked through the viewfinder, and the bottom half was electronic and yet the top half was glass. “?!” I switched it to OVF, and down she went. Switched back to EVF, and up she came – but only halfway. I turned the camera off, cursed, then had an idea that maybe gravity would help… so I turned her upside down and switched her back on. Bingo, full EVF. Off, back on, full EVF.

So it behaved fine for another day or two, then randomly did it again somewhere else. Same trick worked, upside down and it worked fine from there on out. It hasn’t done it since, over say 200 more pictures / two weeks. Temps when it misbehaved were like 70F, not especially dusty out, no rain, etc.

I popped into the store where my wife bought it for me (along with a 2 year / $2,000 warranty) and asked the dude’s opinion. “If it hasn’t done it since, I wouldn’t send it in yet. They’ll just test it, not find anything, and mail it back.”
I use the EVF pretty much 100% of the time, for what it’s worth.

    Thoughts?

Send it in. It will document the problem even if they cannot find or fix it.

If the same problem occurs later out of warranty, they may still treat it as a warranty repair since they didn't fix it earlier.

    I'm on Fiji X100 no.3.
The problem you have sounds like the fault I had with No2. In my case it manifested itself by apparently not switching on without removal of the battery.
When the dealer looked he spotted that the metal blade that rises when you switch to EVF was sticking.
    I'd send it back.

So the dealer has been giving you replacement cameras then? Are the more recent builds having this issue too?

In the UK (and the EEC AFAIK ) under Consumer Law defective "new" goods are a case for replacement or money back ; just one reason for higher retail prices.
Happily , camera No 3 with a 21xxx serial is looking good.
Actually , I think that we're lucky with Fuji UK in that you can have an intelligent conversation with them and workshop turnaround is quick.
