So... I'm thinking about someday moving these forums from vBulletin to Xenforo

At some point, and it definitely won't be any time soon, I'm thinking about changing these forums over from vBulletin to Xenforo. It's going to be a very difficult undertaking, but I think it will pay off in site speed, security, stability, etc.

In order to further investigate the ins and outs of Xenforo, I've set up a chit-chat forum with some topics I like over at www.aminsabet.com. Would be great if some members here would check it out, register, kick the tires, and let me know what you think of Xenforo.

Do we have to create another log-in identity to sign in and give it a try?

    Cheers, Jock

  4. It seems a descent service, although without knowing more about the ins and outs, I really don't have a preference.

The biggest question would be if all of the personal stats would carry over, or we would have to start from scratch.

Seems to work, and feels quite fast service (although not so many users, yet :) )

All of that would carry over.

That means, that it is possible to migrate the content and the images? Personally, I know about the transience of life, but I know that restarts without migration of the content can be extremely difficult for internet forums.

Yes, I would not change software unless I could migrate all the forum content as well as the images and gallery.

Do you want us to roll through the whole profile thing etc.. or just test message speed?

--I registered, email came fine, not in spam.

I signed up and also received no notice, but my account is active.

I even checked my spam folder (which I never do). It's not there, but on the bright side, I met a cheerful fellow from Nigeria who wants to share several million dollars with him if I can help him out.

Question - when you make the switch, might that also be the time to merge all of your sites into one big happy site with sections for each of the current sites?

This gets suggested from time to time, but I think a lot of folks wouldn't like it. I'd get a bunch of emails, messages, and forum threads like "I signed up for _______ because it's a ______ site. If I'd wanted a general forum I would have stayed with _______"

Yup, I can imagine that. But if you can create unique walled gardens for each systems, there might be some neat byproducts of having everyone in the same tent:

    - photo contests with different systems participating
    - single point of entry for people with multiple systems
    - simplified browsing/asking questions for people considering a new system.

Just my $.02. Have no idea what the effort would be to unify the databases and create custom looks for each system. I get tired just thinking about it!

Editing of posts, deletion of posts, smooth. Seems like a clean interface.

as long as the plan is to not move it until way off into the future sometime, I would also love a bigger website that encompasses everything about photography and all possible gear. I imagine there could still be areas that would be for Fuji people or Sonyheads or Mu43 arguments or whatever.

seems like one could set up preferences for what subfora one is interested in and just see those. Now maybe none of the current forum software works that way, but I don;t know why it couldn't.

The way I imagine it is that I would sign up and check boxes indicating that I want to see all parts of the forum that relate to Fuji, Sony, Pentax and Photos (just examples) and I would click on "ignore" for threads that are posted in Mu43, Canon, Nikon, soccer, and Linux.

Something to think about (IMHO). I really do think there should be a way for specialists to enjoy a more generalist website.
