What's with the sax and clarinet player on the train? Was it a band providing some entertainment or just a couple of guys jamming spontaneously?

They were providing some entertainment and collecting some funds. They were pretty good, actually.

you should be able to figure it out...
I thought I'd already commented here, but I guess I'd spaced out where I had and hadn't. But I just want to say for anyone who's liking these images, Antonio has a fairly large set on Flickr of his whole Paris trip and the whole thing is an absolute pleasure and wonderful to spend some time checking out. I got lost in it one morning and managed not to do some stuff I'd planned to that day because of the time spent on vicarious vacation to the City of Light. Of all of the places I'd like to spend a couple of months really getting to know and explore in detail, Paris is at the top of my list. I was only there once, back in 1981, and I was absolutely mesmerized by the place. I don't know when or how I'm gonna make it back, but one of these years, I'm gonna spend some real time there one way or another. Although I know even less French than I do Italian (none) or Spanish (only a little) and in my limited experience, the French are a bit less accommodating of those unwilling to make an effort to meet them on their own terms. So I expect a month in some Parisian neighborhood would be a lot more trying for me than a month in New York or even Italy. But I think it would be worth the effort!

Anyway, if you haven't checked out Antonio's full Flickr set from this trip, you owe it to yourself!

Nice shots. The fellow with the saxophone reminds me of a line from a famous movie "we will always have Paris" ; A favorite

Nice, I wish you also recorded them on video even if a brief clip, assuming your camera has a video function.

What kind of music were they playing? Jazz? Folk? Classical? Eastern European Gypsy music? Was it just the two of them?

I don't know why I'm fascinated by this.

Besides your great eye, the IQ is great too. Don't know if it's straight OOC or post-processed but the photos look wonderful and balanced. It is a true pleasure to watch (and to learn from).

No video, sorry. The M9P does not have a video function. They were playing a jazzy tune, and it was just the two of them. We actually ran into quite a few musicians playing in the Metro, both in the stations and on the train itself.

    Thanks!

    Ray,

I had meant to write you a PM regarding your comment on my Paris set on Flickr as I was quite touched. I really appreciate your very kind comments, both there and here. Coming from a photographer of your caliber, they are high praise indeed.

Paris is an absolutely wonderful city. My only regret is that we didn't visit sooner, and we certainly will try to return as soon as we can. A month's stay, just taking the whole city in, would be a fantastic experience.

    Cheers,

    Antonio

Ray, I'll go with you. I speak fluent "Restaurant French" so we'd never starve when we go. Next to London and New York...Paris is the greatest city to visit. It is rumoured that the rest of France hate Parisienne's. However, I have found that if you make the effort to communicate in their mother tongue.....their sang froid can (if not completely subside) reduce to merely tolerant. As the crow flies (or a cheap seat on Easyjet) Paris is about 250 miles from my door.

Antonio ......you have done Paris a service with these shots. You have captured the mood so well and, as Ray says, you can have a vicarious vacation sitting at your computer avec café cognac and a Caporal.

OK Pete. Probably a few years off though - we're re-doing our kitchen this summer and that's gonna eat our travel budget for a while... Someday, though. Maybe if I start working on the French Rosetta Stone now, within a couple of years I'll be good enough to earn Parisian's tolerance!

The month I spent in NYC and the month on the Amalfi Coast have been the best photographic experiences of my life - full immersion like that really suits me and gives me a good organizing activity through which to get to know a place. Now I go to Manhattan with people and I completely know the place. I'd love to get to that point with Paris in this lifetime. London too, but that feels like less of a challenge because I speak a somewhat bastardized version of the same language (sort of how I feel when I'm in NYC...).

Thanks for reminding me to look on Flickr Ray, sometimes when there are a lot of photos posted all together, it becomes more difficult to comment on any single one and somehow the moment passes when it actually shouldn't. You're right, Antonio's pictures are certainly deserving of a more leisurely perusal

    Great series Antonio, congrats.

This one is my fave, it's pretty rare to see a woman with a bowler hat here, so 2 at the same time is crazy
