Am I crazy, or has there been NO firmware update yet? (careful, this is NOT two questions)

Yes, no firmware update yet. I think RX1r is even has the same firmware as RX1.

From my nex experience, Sony did firmware upgrades for eg focus peaking and menu customization for nex-5 and lens updates for updated hybrid sensors like the ones in nex-6. AF speeds didn't change that much, maybe accuracy improved w/ hybrid sensor which is not used in RX1. Sony doesn't do quick upgrades but it releases lots of new cameras w/ small upgrades... Min shutter speed is also one of them, eg changed from 1/30 sec to 1/60 sec w/ nex-5n. Still there is no customization like min shutter speed limit or iso limits w/ nex cameras... RX1 has at least the upper iso limit...

you should be able to figure it out...
Sony has a reputation for not being big on firmware updates. Nikon too I think. Not sure about Canon. Of the gear I've shot with, Fuji and Ricoh have been the best about updating firmware. Olympus from time to time. But with Sony, you should like the camera as is before you buy it - they may update firmware but don't count on it. I'm basically happy with the RX1 as it is. There are a couple of changes that would be nice, but they're not critical to me at all.

    The Hexagonal.
This is true. Sony doesn't update software much.

Then again, Fuji (which is seen as the example of firmware updates) updates often include things already found in Sony cameras (reliable AF, easier fly-by-wire MF, focus peaking) among other bug fixing updates. When I had a NEX 7, the biggest single improvement on the one update it received was the expansion of the bracketing function (to + - 1, 2 and 3 stops if I dont badly remember), turning off the MOVIE button and the improvement of the flexible spot focusing thing (I really dont know what that meant)

I don't know about the other camera updates or their frequency. The first time I updated anything was my Canon 5D2 and the update was something it was much asked for: manual control of video and later manual control of audio input on video.

Ray is right, though, if there is something you don't like about a Sony cam, do not expect them to provide a firmware upgrade.

I am really upset about this too. They just announced their A7 and A7r and noted all the amazing algorithms that they came up with for auto focus. This seems to be all software related and wish they integrated into a firmware update for the RX1.

The A7s are pretty cool with the built in viewfinder and Wifi / NFC built-in but their available primes suck!

Come on Sony give us a firmware update to improve AF. At least allow us to turn on the focus light manually instead of having it as auto and off.

Yeah this is really getting under my skin with the RX1 & Sony. There are a couple minor bugs people have reported, and a couple things that *REALLY* should be changed with a firmware update (come on, can we really not have focus peaking w/o magnification??).

I will say this camera has probably the least number of issues out of the box I've experienced, and that with a brand new model to boot. But the total lack of FW updates or support almost a year later is not encouraging. it makes one feel like once they have your money Sony couldn't care less about you :frown:

I can say thats its pretty rock solid vs some other cameras I could mention.

jloden I haven't seen that issue raised elsewhere to be frank but it sounds occasionally useful

Yeah, it's come up here, on the Sony RX1 World Shooters FB group, and we've posted it in the Sony product forums as well.

    http://community.sony.com/t5/Cybershot-Cameras/RX1-Focus-peaking-without-magnification/td-p/129811

It's not a *huge* deal, but it's a simple change and thus irritating (at least to me and a few others) that they haven't been bothered.

I'd sort of like it if peaking was available in full screen too, rather than just magnified. But Sony has offered that in other camera (all of the Nex models I think?), so I don't think it's a bug, I think it was a deliberate choice they made for whatever reasons. I personally found when shooting with a Nex that peaking wasn't as accurate in full screen mode as when magnified and I had to be a lot more careful about how I used it. True bugs I'd expect them to fix. Mere choices of features I wouldn't expect them to change, no matter how important they may be to me. Fuji and, to a lesser extent, Ricoh, seem to actually change and add features in FW updates through the lives of their cameras. I'm not aware of anyone else that does. And in terms of bugs, the RX1 has as few as anything I've ever used...

Yeah, I've long since accepted they're just not going to change the behavior, unfortunately.

The bigger issue is the absence of ANY firmware updates at all - makes me feel like they're just going to ignore this camera until the RX2 or whatever comes out. Thankfully any bugs being reported for the RX1 are minor, and it's very stable/solid, but no apparent support at all is kind of grating with that kind of sticker price.

I really appreciate that Fuji listens to consumers and makes sweeping improvements in FW as well as hardware. It'd be nice if more manufacturers took such an approach... but then Sony has never been known for that

What could we expect in a firmware update?

    New Rx1r JPG compression.
    AF speed increase
    Peaking improvement.

    ...?

Can peaking in the RX1 allow for pinpoint focus? Was playing with one at the Sony Store, and the shimmer was present for a while as I kept turning the focus ring. I was wondering how it was possible that the camera was in focus after so many ring turns.

be nice if peaking was fullscreen and they just warned you that it may be less accurate, but still give us the choice! CHOICE! lol

if they CAN speed up the af speed, HEAVEN.
hmm... i cant really think of anything else id REALLY want... hmm

Here are some additional firmware updates that I would like:

Ability to set minimum shutter speed in A mode. (I find 1/80 too slow.)
Ability to customize the Function menu. (Why is quality not available? There's even a space for it.)
When shooting Raw + jpeg, ability to choose extra fine.
No continuous AF in either of the continuous drive modes. (AF locks with the first shot.)

My wish list for RX1 Firmware update.

I know sony is reading :p

    1. Rx1r JPG compression algorithm
    2. Ability to customize the menu dial during shooting mode. Either ISO(loved that from Nex7), Digital zoom(my wife uses digtal zoom), focus peaking zoom,
    3. Ability to modify focus peaking. Zoom level (including autoframe - which crops the viewport to the largest focused object), timing, non-focused color etc
    4. Ability to modify max and minimum auto settings for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO
    5. Time Lapse shooting mode.
    6. Improved AF speed and accuracy
    7. Inbuilt ND
    8. Way Way smaller focus point for spot focus and flexible focus.

i also want to be able to shoot in a art filter type mode in jpg+raw
i wanted to shoot in the hcmono the other day, and i had to go back out of it, then go to the monochrome mode and max out the contrast to try to get it looking similar for live evf preview
but you cant do that with any other modes really

If anyone from SONY is watching - please release a firmware update with improved AF. I love my RX1 but the AF needs improvement!

That's about the only upgrade I'd like.... maybe also to have no delay between LCD view and EVF.

One more: Slow-synch flash only works when you manually select ISO. It is ineffective when using auto ISO, even when AE lock is engaged. (When AE lock is engaged, the RX1 still chooses a lower ISO when the flash is activated, and the ambient exposure will be too dark.) So, fix the firmware to permit effective slow-synch flash when using auto ISO.
