By way of a change on what has been a busy couple of days for old engines working the mainline I thought I'd photograph at Plymouth Station (or as I still call it North Road). My Mother was born just a few minutes walk from the other end of the station.

    Anyway, to business.

Having worked the complete train down this morning this Western Class 52 (in itself 51 years old) takes five of the carriages back, hence lightening the load for Castle Class Earl of Mount Edgecumbe to take the rest, eight in total. The steam engine is waiting in the distance behind the vegetation on the left.

With the diesel gone the Earl can now back down onto its train.

A more spectacular departure than the diesel made

Smoke and steam fills the air, hence a slight haze in this shot. Those photographers on the platform possibly only photographed smoke and steam.

The engines looks are slightly spoilt by the double chimney, otherwise it looks in fine fettle for the non stop journey to Oxford.

All with the DP2M set to b+w mode and a yellow filter attached, some enhancement in Silver Efex

I've just checked and the train arrived in Bristol Temple Meads 31 minutes early having been allowed to run through what had been scheduled as a 10 minute stop at Dawlish Warren to allow a faster train to pass, that proved not to be necessary. There has been some spirited steam running this last two days :clap2:

However because the train was early a friend hoping to see it nearer Bristol missed it by 5 minutes, oh dear.

Pics are so crisp and the scenery so well met. Just great. B&W the best way to go, colors would distract.

Wonderful pictures especially in black and white but the poor Castle is horribly disfigured by the double chimney!

I think these are fabulous. They remind me of something from the 1930s.

  9. My late father would have loved these photos. He was a railroady all his life And worked half his life on them, 1/2 a world away from these wonderful shots.
