Story of a fisherman

These were taken during the last evening preparations before the fishing season opened last fall in Turkey. We talked with the fisherman in the photo. The fishing season lasts for 2-3 months. The journey will take them to the open seas from Black Sea to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, away from their families. They work with small pay plus the profit share from the fish sales, so their families depend on what they catch.

Thanks for your comments. When we talked with the fisherman, we didn't know it was their last night in the harbor there. They worked late and the next morning their ship was already sailed. This is the same boat 8 years ago, not very big:

I think the story doesn't change much wherever you go, it is a tough job.

In Cape Cod, MA we talked with a fuel pump guy for boats a couple years ago. He was telling a similar story with the Portuguese immigrants doing the fishing there and the current cheap fish pricing wasn't helping them much. But then it was sad to see the expensive fish prices at the local restaurants in Cape Cod. These photos entitled "They Also Faced the Sea" at the fisherman wharf in Provincetown were the ladies who were waiting for their husbands that were in the ocean.
