I was invited to shoot a charity Thai Boxing event last evening. I had the X-T1 with 16mm and 5d Mk3 with 17-40L lens and 100-400L (just in case it was useful)

Neither w/a lens's had IS on them, so my Parkinson's tremor means they are not as sharp as they could be........but probably quite acceptable from a distance.

Much more difficult to shoot than one would imagine, what with the speed of the opponents, them facing the wrong way when hitting or being hit or the ref getting between the opponents and your camera at the vital moment.

Some taken with flash, but did not feel comfy using it at ringside in case it affected the boxers.

I almost suffered 2 knockout blows. Due to my lack of experience in this genre I was too close to the ropes with the 5d and 100-400L lens when one of the boxers came crashing backwards and shoved the camera hard into my face. Doh.....how stoooopid can I be?

    So, here goes!

if I ever get in a real fight one day, I hope it's with the guy on the right in photo #3.....swinging with his eyes totally closed. I think I could knock him out. I love the grit and grain here, Pete. Well done.

Luke, I wouldn't be so sure. That's the same guy who is fully concentrated on kicking the lights out of his opponent in #10. I have much respect for thai/kickboxers. The amount of pain they can withstand while keep on fighting is tremendous.

Pete, this is a great set. To me, the grain and the missed focus only add to the feel of power and speed that comes from these images.

Pete, that's superb stuff by any standard, let alone given your tremor. There is real life, real action here. Bravo!

Thank you Bill, very kind. Ironic I know, but the tremor worsened as the night went on. All down to the excitement at being ringside, the noise from the baying crowd (fuelled by beer). By the end of the night my left hand was bagging out its own beat and I was shooting a 5d mk3 with 17-40L with one hand! :0)

I don't know how you did it with those speeds but it looks awesome. I also think that the grain and less-rhan-optimal-sharpness ( and the BWprocessing) bring something extra.
It must have required some anticipation/preparation to make these shots with the X-T1 (although the 16mm helps!).
I thoroughly enjoyed your series. Thanks for sharing.

These are all ace shots and the grain adds to the atmosphere. I particularly like number 4 from the first set just because of it's unusual angle. Be proud and well done!!

I also particularly like the flash shots. Nice to see the difference in character. And nr. 16 is brilliant!

I'm curious, how did you focus with the X-T1?

  20. Quite impressive, great treatment.
