Hello, and welcome to the 22nd Salon Challenge! Thanks to BillN for his excellent work in the last challenge.

The theme for this challenge is: Epic! It could be an epic sight, an epic action, an epic stunt, an epic piece of architecture, an epic scene in nature, an epic meal . . . use your imagination . . . anything that is epic to you.

    Cheers, Jock

Closing date is the 5th February 2016.

With gratitude, I have cut and pasted the rules from the last challenge:

    1. Either take a picture that matches the nominated theme or select one from your portfolio. You must be the photographer that created the image in order to enter it.

    2. Only one entry per salon, please. If you want to withdraw an entry and replace it with another, that is OK, but you must make it clear in the post containing your replacement picture that this is what you've done. You can add or change the title and add to the edit line to let everyone know.

    3. The decision of the curator at the end of the challenge is final - don't give him/her a hard time about it: this is just a friendly photo challenge, after all!

    4. The person who submitted the chosen picture will assume the responsibility of curator for the next Salon Challenge and as soon as possible post a message in a new thread in the PL Photo Challenges forum, with details of the new theme. Don't forget - that opening message must include a copy of these instructions, which also double as the rules.

    5. The curator cannot enter his or her own salon.

OK, I'll give it a go. It was epic to be there at that precise moment, hopefully the image can convey a bit of the spectacle. Here's what I wrote about at that time:

"Fribourg, Switzerland, confirmed the truth behind the proverb "The early bird catches the worm". Woke up early for a walk around hotel before going to work, and life treated me with 15 minutes of mist and bliss. Moments later it dispersed; tomorrow there was none. Got in, shot, got out."

not an amazing photo by any definition, but when I saw this thing...... I just thought "whoah!". It's one of the blades of those giant wind turbines. It never occurred to me how they got these things where they needed to be.

Being an ex-OTR driver, you don't run into your local 7-11 for a quick sandwich, when you drive one of those rigs.

I think this one has to be mine. Its old, and its been a long time since I have been able to be out and about at that hour. Its my favourite. Epic? Meh. Maybe. But, I like it.

Based on the entries so far, I can see that people have totally "gotten" the theme, and it's not going to be easy to pick a winner. Cool!

    Keep those entries coming!

    *** entry withdrawn.

RED's remark (see below) made me aware that I had promised myself earlier to partipate in challenges only with photos I took for that challenge and not use one of the archives. I had forgotten about that. My apologies for any inconvenience.

Just a thought to ponder - I reckon a month is too long for these challenges - generally most of the shots come from archives & interest peters out after the first 10 days or so.
I think A week would be more appropriate.

I reckon two weeks. Other week long challenges are over and done, often, before I even think about it.

Good point. One month is perfect for finding new photographic opportunities. 1or 2 weeks should be fine when using photos from the archives.

Personally I think Challenges should include new photos -within a specific time frame - only. While it may reduce the number of entries it "challenges" us to go out, find and shoot something that meets the theme.

    Just my 2cents..

For this challenge it means I am not participating because I already participate in the SIJ2016.

It seems to me a month is just right. If I recall correctly, there was challenge -- theme: WIDE -- and entries (really good ones) kept coming in for a very long time. Sometimes a challenge doesn't come up on my radar screen until I notice that people keep posting to it. I suspect the last challenge didn't receive so many entries because people are often really busy during the holidays.

Also, IMHO, any photo that fits the theme should qualify . . . new, from the archives, even if it has been entered in a previous challenge.

Of course, it might be interesting -- in a future challenge -- to flip everything on its head: all photos must be taken within a week of the challenge being posted and must never have been posted to any forum.

    Cheers, Jock

Slight misuse of the word epic ...... but seems to have come into modern usage

70th Anniversary of the DD landings WW2 - sailing on MV Normandie to the French Beaches on a "watery" day across the English Channel

    "an epic voyage" - maybe

distant memories - not many of these guys left
