In 2007 the BBC produced a series called The Genius of Photography. Over six episodes the series traced the history of photography from its beginnings to the present day.

This is how the BBC described the series:

Last year the BBC made the entire series available on YouTube. If you have some time to spare it is well worth watching. You will find it at at the official Genius of Photography YouTube page.

It is an excellent series, and I would also recommend it, but with two proviso's. Firstly some of it is VERY pretentious, and some of their choices about who to focus on and who to leave out is somewhat subjective.

Agreed on both points David but I suppose both are somewhat inevitable - photography is full of the pretensions of the insecure, and trying to cover that much ground in such a short series is always going to entail some difficult or controversial choices.

Overall though it was a very good series and it was good to see a major broadcaster taking a serious interest in photography (even if it was tucked away on BBC4).

Indeed. There is lots of decent photographic stuff tucked away on Sky Arts. Rankin does some programmes and events for them, and they often have features on snappers.
