Every Fall a group of us meet up at North Station in boston on a sunday morning, hop the trains with bikes to Ipswich MA, then go to an orchard and a beach before coming back home. The orchard does a fruit wine tasting event, with 30ish different kinds of fermented goodies... gooseberries, blackberries, raspberries, mulberries, dandelions, ginger, and of course apples and pears. All but the ginger are grown on-site. They send you through 4 rooms during an hour, pouring little samples and explaining everything. There's a barn with animals, and snacks, and cider donuts, and live bluegrass... My wife's been out of town for a week, but the daughter and I still went happily. Some shots...

We were walking through the dunes to the beach, and Jess (pictured)'s boyfriend put the wine bottle there to be funny. Then he said "hey you should get this," and I trotted up and shot it without even telling her. Was walking behind her, cam set to 1/4000 and f2. When I saw it later while reviewing shots at the pub we got beers at pre-train home, I felt like I'd won the lottery. Looks like I didn't take it. Today, I feel like it's my favorite picture I've ever taken.

Great story about a fabulous photo.
And it opens a whole new world of opportunities for a new photo project: people with bottles on their back!

Looks like a fun outing - and indeed that first shot is absolutely amazing, wonderful atmosphere you caught. I really like the second one as well; looks like your daughter is having fun, and it looks like a very pretty area.

you should be able to figure it out...
Really nice set - all of them are enjoyable. But #1 is absolutely my favorite. Overwhelmingly really. Something about the red hair, the coat, the bottle of wine, and the OOF beach and sky in the background. Just a WONDERFUL shot. It tells you SO MUCH about the day without showing anything terribly explicitly. That one deserves a large print and probably a frame. There's so much packed into that shot. I'm guessing you like it a lot too or you wouldn't have (consciously or sub-consciously) put it first...

That turkey shot is just in time for Thanksgiving. He looks like he's hiding.

...well this was a nice surprise this morning.

You are completely right, Ray. As I've said before, my internal radar isn't all that well calibrated, and I can't always tell if other people will like something as much as I do, or find it boring. But that one, when I saw it, I thought "ok, surely THIS one isn't just me." And yeah, I think I opted to lead with it because I was proud. -chuckle- The wife, of course, promptly thanked the boyfriend for setting the bottle there and suggesting I shoot it, when I told her the story. "See, HE gets it." She's trying to help me get over the next hump, and I desperately need that help. Once I get to where I can expose things well enough, it becomes time to work on having better ideas in the first place. The bottle shot has everything in it - motion, scenery, a few key props that tell you just enough to know where you are and what you're doing. It's all a big hint, but an easy one. Jess's red hair and fashionable coat helped. These kinds of shots are what I need to get better at creating in the first place, not just capturing if they magically happen on their own.

When I saw that first shot on the front page, I thought for sure it was from a new member. This gal who lives in Canada that I've followed for years on flickr shoots a LOT of photos that look like this. I thought she invented the idea of the headless enviromental portrait. I think you'd enjoy the lion's share of her work. At times, her stream may make it seem borderline narcisisstic, but I think it's that she lives way out int he wilderness of Canada and she's also beautiful enough to be her own model. If you like your lead shot, you may find some inspiration in her stream..... https://www.flickr.com/photos/theproletariatdesigner/

She's 46?!?!? I guess 46 looks better and better the farther past it I get. But I know you're just a sucker for anyone who includes this shot:

And although she's great looking and lives in a gorgeous place, I don't see a lot there with the subtle charms of Kyle's first shot in this stream. She seems to have a good sense of humor though, which makes her whole photostream that much more appealing...
