Unobtrusive cameras

This topic always causes me some consternation, because while I understand the need to be discrete, for me there's a fuzzy line where discrete becomes secretive. To help me understand where that line is drawn, I've developed a simple litmus test:

Would showing the picture I want to take to the subject make me feel uncomfortable?

Please note that this makes no mention of the subject's feelings, whether or not they feel put upon or have their privacy violated. That's a related but different discussion related to social norms. What I'm talking about here are my own values and making sure that my photography stays within them.

It's a fuzzy line for sure, and there have been times when, looking back, I think that I have crossed it. But at least I know and hopefully learn.
