Last weekend, my wife, her parents and myself took a drive up to Washington, DC for a little impromptu vacation. I normally take a ton of gear that I don't really need when I travel (like last summer on my honeymoon out west when I took a 5D, 17-40, Contax TVS, Fuji Klasse, Canon G10, Horizon 202 and a Manfrotto Tripod). Not only do I tend to take too much gear, but I tend to spend too much time trying to figure out what to use when and where and my shoulders hate me for several days on my return from lugging around a bunch of crap I don't need (in my defense, I was carrying a rather large backpack out west so the gear was easily carried and my wife's 5D failed during the trip so she took my 5D and I shot with my 35mm compacts and the G10 the whole time which turned out to be a blessing in disguise, really).

Anyway, on this particular trip, I decided to go small. I recently grabbed a Ricoh GR1 from one of the other forums (a camera I've been lusting after for quite some time) and for some digital fun, I packed my Canon 5D and the 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake lens (a very capable lens and one I'm very glad to own for just these occasions where I want a seriously compact serious SLR). Here are a few shots from my trip to DC with the GR1 shot on Kodak BW400 (Yes, I cheated and got the C-41 stuff...). These are drug store scans with some slight processing in SilverEfex to convert them to pure black and white, but no other edits were made.

And here are a few from the 5D/40 Combo (Not necessarily a serious compact, but seriously compact in the way of SLRs). All processed in Photoshop CS5 using RadLab. No other sharpening or corrections applied.

Love the look of the GR1 shots. Very crisp and contrasty.

Thank you! They turned out surprisingly well. Definitely exceeded my expectations for a point and shoot camera.
