Each member gets one guess. The answer will be revealed on the following Tuesday. The first (or MOST) correct guess has the honour of submitting the image for the next challenge. Sometimes there will be more than one thing in the photo or more than one way to accurately describe what the photo represents. The original poster will be the final judge of who is "most correct".

    So. What is it?

This is slightly esoteric so the nearest guess of the function will probably win!

seems like it's circular...and has some supports connected to the center. But why is the edge so decorative.

Is it some sort of tool? How about for used for printing....roll it in ink, and then roll it onto the paper.

Looks to be a hand carving in wood or some other soft material. A furniture piece perhaps, like the border of a mirror.

  6. Please tell us when we can do a second guess, hopefully before I forget what I just thought of....

A few hours to go and some close answers but no cigar so far. I'll announce the winner (or nearest) this afternoon UK time.

OK folks, the silence is deafening :)
This is a tool for applying patterns in gold leaf to leather book covers. It's one of many magnificent hand tools used by my good friend Glenn who runs his own bookbinding business. (Shameless plug: Signature Bindings, book repairs and restoration, Bible repairs, wedding albums, presentation books, bindings for writers and fine design bindings )
    Here are some others:
    48DEF269-60F2-407B-8682-B63FBAAD0AE7 (1).

Anyway, to cut to the chase, both Luke and Bill were sort of on the right lines, but in fairness I think Luke got there first, so he is the winner of this week's challenge.
    Over to you Luke!
