    World even the £

I'm retired so it effects me - is it all going to go down?, I've no idea and I have a financial/business background - it all beats me - apart from the obvious, greed, greed, greed, from many sources

We thought that the Bankers had stuffed us - but it now looks like they will get stuffed, (although they will keep their high salaries and big bonuses), now the government are at it, $Rupert Murdosh$ is really Mr Darth Vader and look at what else is creeping out of the "dark" wood pile - can someone "close the shed door and set fire to it, (them)"

Where will all end? - is this the "big correction?" - my "piggy bank" needs to know - but what the 'hell" we are still planning a "nice holiday" this month and a Parador, (great food and marvellous scenery), trip in October.

They are all rushing into Gold - again and again - maybe a solid Gold M9 is in the pipeline for the Ruskies and Arabs - at least my old M6 seems to be increasing in value

    What do you think?

keep the comments "gentle otherwise the Mods will get high blood pressure

This is my husband's main fixation at the moment. Where will it all end. I think we just have to sit tight for now. August is always bad for the S.Market and things tend to pick up a bit in the run up to Christmas. Good to hear that the UK pound is the most devalued currency in all of this :(

don't "tip" stuff on here - now there will be a run on "dog food" - just give the "brokers and guys in the City" the Stock Exchange code for that company and they will start speculating like crazy - it will have "doubled" in value by next week!!!!!

My stock tip for today - Dog Food Inc, (PLC) - but only for the "short term" as eventually it will turn to crap

I've just bought a couple of FTSE "highish yielding" blue chips, (as they are called!!) - so get ready for a fall in the FTSE100

The asset class which held its value best over the last couple of years was Leica M lenses, particularly Summiluxes, Noctiluxes. An alternative to gold or other real assets?

LOL! Even Canon lenses have gone up in value. If I had put my retirement savings in lenses, I'd have more money than now!

In the States, we have this thing called a "401K" which is where you put a portion of your income, automatically from your paycheck (the one benefit being that income is not taxed). Every quarter you get a report that says "Your 401K went up $1000!" which is fantastic, until you realize you put in $1,500 over the last quarter, so you actually lost $500!!!

Me.. thinking of dumping bonds and buying a tiny 50m3 house on the coast - the problem being that million others are thinking the same, driving bonds down and houses up around here - so the resulting decision is "sit tight, do nothing this summer, see if you still have a job this autumn, and meanwhile prepare for Rajasthan on the cheap for October".

My dearest just said "if money ends, we just stay there and open a B&B, Italian style" (I knew I married the right one)

This has been a big issue around here in the states.

I realize that this is a camera forum, but the state of the economy directly effects my GAS, LOL! While I still have a job and I am still young, I really worry about the future of the global economy. I worry about my retirement, and I'm only 30. I've been investing into my 401k for 7 years, and I've average only about 6 percent a year, when I need to be seeing at least 9-12 to retire. Just yesterday I lost about 5 percent of my 401k, in the last few months abotu a total of 20 percent. It was making a strong comeback the last year or so, but those gains are starting to vanish.

I guess I could go out and buy some more gear and just not worry about it. If the economy really tanks, at least I'll be poor and happy instead of just plain poor, lol.

Check the rate of return. That's what is imporant. Its hard to get an exact amount when the value of the stocks go up and down and money gets dumped in once a month.

If you put in $1500 and the TOTAL value of your 401 only goes up $1,000, that's a negative RR.

Huh? Are you saying after it goes up, the total value is (1500 put in + 1000 in return)2500? Or are you saying you put 1500 in, and the total ends up being 1000? (ie, you lost 500).

If the case of the latter, you would have a negative rate of return.

My 401k plan uses a Modified Deitz formla for determining Annual Rate of Return(sometimes Personal Rate of Return)

    another "buying opportunity" then

Royal Dutch Shell has fallen quite a lot this week - a very solid company with an almost 5% yield - although they are being sued for an enormous oil spill, (est: = 10 million gals), in the Niger delta some years ago

A lot of good companies are undervalued at the moment according to my "source", i.e. my husband! There appears to be no real reason for this. Just got to keep the faith

I am nearing retirement and it is absolutely stuffing me. I will have to work longer.

Too many people are idiots. A country that has 1/2% of the world's economic activity sneezes slightly and you loose 5% etc. because the idiots panic thereby stuffing everyone else up and creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.
