As technology advances and software becomes more important in the creative process, I feel like I'm starting to see more images without pure black. People are lifting shadows to show us what's hidden there. I'm not here to pass judgment on whether the technology is intrinsically making photos or worse. Like any tool, it's up to the photographer to use it properly.

Show us one of your best where the shadows (whether pitch dark, or lifted to show us what is hidden in them) are a key element to the photo. I'm looking forward to your submissions.

The salon will end on August 31st, so you'll have just under 2 weeks to shoot something new or pull something from your archives.
    Rules are simple................

    1. Either take a picture that matches the nominated theme or select one from your portfolio. You must be the photographer that created the picture in order to enter it.

    2. Only one entry per salon, please. If you want to withdraw an entry and replace it with another, that is OK, but you must make it clear in the post containing your replacement picture that this is what you've done. You can add or change the title and add to the edit line to let everyone know.

    3. The decision of the curator at the end of the challenge is final - don't give him/her a hard time about it: this is just a friendly photo challenge, after all!

    4. The person who submitted the chosen picture will assume the responsibility of curator for the next Salon Challenge and as soon as possible post a message in a new thread in the PL Photo Challenges forum, with details of the new theme. Don't forget - that opening message must include a copy of these instructions, which also double as the rules.

    5. The curator can't enter his or her own salon.

    6. Please, donĀ“t be shy...Participate and have fun!

I suddenly remembered playing with this shot from back in April. I played a lot with the shadows/blacks and never quite decided what I liked best. Given the challenge, I'll favor the blacks:

I've always found it interesting that when I go to shadow/highlight adjustment in PS the shadows are automatically brightened but the highlights are left alone. You can change it of course but it does introduce a bias into the system.

This is a hard one to enter for me, because it is a subject close to my heart; hence I have a number of options. I'm going to go with this one, partly because I have never posted it here before and partly because the ambiguity appeals.

    An entertaining exercise this Luke
May well be replaced with another but for the time being I have here probably one of the most mundane and ordinary shots imaginable

As a surprise for myself I found quite many snaps that used shadows/black as an effect. Difficulties to chose one but ended up to this one.

Shot this today biking in to work. There's an abandoned rail bed down there that will be turned into a bike path soon enough, but for now it remains a favorite haunt of the spray paint crowd. This is on the little path that connects the street above with the shadowy tracks and a tunnel below.
