I recently had the privilege of guiding one of our 'winter walks' on Tasmania's Overland Track. As a company we have only run a few of these, and this one was particularly special as it came a couple of weeks after the heaviest snow that Tassie has seen since the early 90's. A pretty amazing 7 days!

    All shot with the GR.

  2. Lovely series.

Wait a minute, it is summer time, not winter time. ;)

Lovely . I'm assuming the GR performed well in those conditions ?

Yep, for the most part I kept it either in a small pouch on my harness, or in a (mostly) waterproof pocket on my jacket if it was wet. I sat it in front of the heater each evening to thaw it out but it never stopped working... A few of the guests were carrying fairly high-end ILC's (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus) but given the weather we had they stayed in packs for a lot of the time we were walking. Having the GR accessible all the time was really handy (I was also carrying my Leica M2 and 35mm Color Skopar and I barely shot with it for this reason...) and is the reason you see some of the snowier photos I've posted above.

Interestingly, the shutter in my co-guide's EM1 jammed half-way across the sensor for a couple of hours when we were walking out in about -5C (I believe EM1's are rated to -10C?). It was fine once it warmed up, but unexpected nonetheless...

Image quality was outstanding as usual for the GR :)

Very, very nice. The ones with active snowfall are my favorites.

I did something similar in Peru, hiking to Macchu Pichu with the original X100 in a tiny black bag, which I had on my hiking pack's compression strap on my chest. It was Right There... so easy to grab-shoot-stash, when everyone else brought DSLRs.

Those are some of the nicest snow shots I've seen in a while.

A second look through these pictures reinforces my commitment to stay with small pocketable cameras.
GAS for anything else seems to have worn off.
You have some great images as a reminder of your trip.
I am looking forward to using my Ricoh's this winter, knowing I won't be weighed down by gear I don't really need.
    Great pictures.

Wow, those photos are excellent! I'm sure those winter trips are fun. I can't wait for winter to come here to try winter hiking in the Eastern Carpathians.
