Does anybody know the technical differences involved in the two autufocus modes AF and Macro? I know that you can focus closer in the macro mode, and it seems that it might be a little slower, but I'm wonder if there are other differences/downsides. I had to disassemble my XZ-1 recently in order to clean the sensor (Olympus wanted $130 for the procedure), and after reassembling, AF at the wide end of the zoom often fails in the regular AF mode. This is regardless of subject distance. Zooming in or switching it to the macro focusing mode solves the issue.

    Thanks!

Perhaps you should go back and ask the person who posted the information about how to clean the sensor yourself. No way I would do it, or let anyone but Olympus do it.

As much as I played with it, it just appeared to me that the Macro Mode just allows closer focusing. I once left the AF in that mode and it seemed to focus on things far away just fine. There is also a super macro mode which only works at the wide end I believe. I leave the focus box on center most times when we are shooting with it.

I believe Macro Mode just allows closer focusing and regular AF blocks the ability to focus closely to shorten the time it takes for the camera to rack the lens through the whole range of focus and thus having quicker focus locks.
